Walter W. Hemming

Walter W. Hemming, 84, of Brookline, NH, beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2024, at Catholic Medical Center, Manchester, NH surrounded by his family. He was born in Vineland, New Jersey on October 2, 1939, son of Percy and Marguerite (Smith) Hemming.

Walter graduated from Watertown (NY) High School, class of 1957. He continued his education at Syracuse University, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration/Accounting, along with many academic achievements. He started his long and distinguished business career with Arthur Young and Co in 1961. He moved on to work for Cocoa-Cola for 18 years in many executive financial roles. Other career highlights included being a board director of Centerpoint and Centrix banks. Later, he owned and operated his own financial consulting firm, Hemming Associates, for 20 years until his retirement.

Walter married his high school sweetheart, Shirley, on June 10, 1961. They originally settled in Brooklyn NY where their 2 daughters, Cindy and Cathy were born and later moved to New Brunswick NJ, where they welcomed their son, Walt Jr. After 2 more stops in residences in Connecticut they settled in Hollis, NH in 1978 where they enjoyed raising their family for 20 years. In 1998, they built a beautiful home in Brookline NH, where they enjoyed their retirement years.

Walter found solace in the serenity of nature, often hiking with his Black lab companions or tending to his many gardens. He was well known for his green thumb and could often be found in local garden shops and farms. He enjoyed spending time at the family vacation home on Sebago Lake, where he loved to boat and fish. Walter also enjoyed woodworking and was an avid traveler. Community involvement was also very important to him, he dedicated his time to various organizations as well as supporting local charities. He was an active and devoted member of the Hollis Congregational Church for many years. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Family members include two daughters and a son-in-law, Cindy McDuffee of Stafford Springs, CT, and Cathy and Chris Nolen of Phoenixville, PA; a son, Walter W. Hemming, Jr. of Litchfield, NH; six grandchildren, Shawn McDuffee and his wife Jenna, Brian McDuffee and his wife Rebekah, Rachel and Kyle Nolen, and Cassie and Wyatt Hemming; two great-children, Logan and Carson McDuffee; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and James Brant of Royersford, PA; close friend Sylvia Eggleston and his devoted Black Labrador Leah. Special thanks to his caregiver Charlene Szarek for providing him dedicated care and companionship. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley L. (Derocher) Hemming, and a daughter-in-law, Renée R. Hemming.
