Dorothy Alice (Smith) Welch

Mar 13, 2024

Dorothy Alice (Smith) Welch, known to most as Dottie, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2024, at High Point House in Haverhill, MA. She was 99 years old.

Dottie was born on July 16, 1924, in Milford to Andrew and Gladys Smith, the eldest of their eight children. She graduated from Milford High School in 1942. Her family relocated to Nashua when Dottie was 18. She married Raymond Biathrow in 1947, and traveled the country as a military spouse, eventually settling back in Nashua with her two children, Ronald, and Donna.

Dottie was well known throughout Nashua for over 30 years as a taxi driver. People would refer to her as the “Taxi Lady.” She drove for 55 Taxi in downtown Nashua until her retirement at age 91. Her passengers and coworkers always considered her reliable and sweet.

Dottie could always be counted on to have candy available. She loved candy and kept stashes in her cab and even her coat pockets, much to the delight of her passengers, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Her love of candy could only be matched by her love of jewelry. There was almost never a day in her near century of life that Dottie didn’t fully fix herself up for the day, with makeup, perfume and a stunning array of jewelry.

Dottie is predeceased by her husbands, Raymond Biathrow and Charles Welch, her parents, her brothers Donald, Richard, Andrew Jr, and her sister and brother-in-law Eleanor and William (Elly & Billy) Grant, as well as her brother-in-law Ronald Reck, and son-in-law Bizz Lavoie. She is survived by her sisters Norma O’Loughlin, Barbara Solek, and Carol Reck, as well as her son Ronald Biathrow and his wife Charlene, and daughter Donna Lavoie. Survivors also include five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, cousins, and friends.

SERVICES: A Graveside Service will be held Friday, March 15, 2024, at 1 pm at Westview Cemetery, Burnham Rd, Hudson, NH, 03051. Friends and family are invited to attend. An online guestbook is available at www.davisfuneralhomenh.com. (603)883-3401 “ONE MEMORY LIGHTS ANOTHER.”
