Sylvia Dumont Martel

Sylvia Dumont Martel, passed away on March 6, 2024, at the age of 88 at Generations of Ashe Assisted Living, in West Jefferson, NC. She was born on November 3, 1935, in Lewiston, Maine, to the late, Emile and Armosa Blais Dumont. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Roland Martel, her son, Marc E. Martel, four sisters, Constance, Lorraine, Muriel and Henrietta as well as one brother, Julian.

Sylvia lived a life filled with love, joy, and compassion. She was a woman who embraced life with an open heart, kindness and warmth to everyone she met, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her. Throughout her life, Sylvia found great satisfaction in her role as a dedicated homemaker, and cherished moments spent with family and friends.

Later in life when she had more time, Sylvia was able to pursue several hobbies, such as golf, bowling, scrap booking, and working out at Curves, which she enjoyed doing with friends and neighbors.

Many people first came to know Sylvia in the town of Burgaw, where she worked daily at her daughter Monique’s bakery. She then went on to enjoy her role as a greeter and hostess at her grandson’s restaurant, “The Other Place Cafe”. She greeted guests with a radiant smile and made everyone feel welcome with her genuine hospitality. Sylvia’s presence added a special touch to the dining experience, and her warmth touched the hearts of all who crossed her path.

Mrs. Martel is survived by two daughters, Terry Denner and husband, Robert of Morganton, NC, and Monique Martel Kirby and husband, Kerry of Glendale Springs, NC, as well as two grandsons, Matthew W. Grandin and wife Crystal, and Kyle Adam Grandin, and wife Accrina. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
