Marion L. Muzzey Sherwin
Marion Louise (Muzzey) Sherwin, 89, of Hollis, NH, passed away at her winter home in Englewood, FL on Monday, January 15, 2024 of natural causes.
Marion was born on September 19, 1934 in Nashua, NH, daughter of Harland A. Muzzey Sr. and Betsy L. (Hawes) Muzzey, and sister to Martha A. (Muzzey) Spaulding and Harland A. Muzzey Jr. When Marion was 10 years old, the Muzzey family moved from Hudson to Hollis. Marion was a 1952 graduate of Hollis High School, where she played basketball and softball throughout high school, and received both the Babe Ruth and D.A.R. Awards. She remained a life-long resident of Hollis, and was an active and proud member of the community.
Marion married Daniel F. Sherwin Jr. in December 1994, and together they had many adventures traveling, and spent quality time with their family members and friends. Marion’s first marriage was to Alan L. Orde Jr., who she married in June 1952. They spent over 30 years together raising their three children and operating Orde’s Dairy Farm and Feed Store.
Marion worked for the Hollis School District for over 30 years as the Director of the School Lunch Program. Her tenure spanned from the 1960’s through the early 1990’s, during which she supported the expansion of the program from the basement of the Farley Building, to the High School (1962), and later the Middle School (1972).
Marion was also a founding partner of Hollis Transportation in 1979, which provided bus and transportation services for the school system until 2019. She played a crucial role in the accounting and management of the business for many years. Just so that she stayed busy, she also worked summers at Silver Lake State Park and winter weekends at Temple Mountain Ski Area, running the concessions at both lodges.
Marion was a very active person, both personally and within the local community. She was an avid outdoor walker, a practice she continued into 2023. She loved dancing, and was an accomplished ballroom dancer. She was also a fervent traveler and camper, visiting every US state (except Hawaii) and many countries, and was always willing to pack her bags and go on an adventure. Marion was a longtime member of the Hollis Congregational Church and the Englewood Methodist Church, supported many causes, and could always be counted on to lend her time and skills for a town or community event.
Marion truly made the most of life, and her greatest love was her family. She will be remembered by her family as the most loving and supportive matriarch who walked through life calmly and full of grace, always with an infectious laugh and beaming smile.
Marion is survived by her three children: her daughter Deborah A. (Orde) Marchant and her husband Richard of Fort Myers, FL; her son Douglas A. Orde and his significant other Sharon LaChapelle of Hollis, NH; and her son David H. Orde and his significant other Kristen Bennett of Hollis, NH. She is survived by her two grandchildren: her granddaughter Kaitlyn M. Orde and her husband Ben Hill of Milford, NH, and her grandson Andrew H. Orde of Hollis, NH. She is survived by her sister-in-law Evelyn (Brown) Muzzey, and by two step-children: Heidi A. Jones and Bradford M. Sherwin, and their families. Marion also leaves many extended family and special friends, with whom she valued her time with tremendously.
Marion was predeceased by her husband of 23 years, Daniel F. Sherwin Jr., as well as her brother Harland A. Muzzey Jr. and sister Martha A. (Muzzey) Spaulding–both of Hollis, NH. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Alan L. Orde Jr.
The family will hold a celebration of life for family and friends in Hollis this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Marion to Home Health & Hospice Care in Merrimack, NH (www.hhhc.org; 7 Executive Park Drive Merrimack, NH 03054, Attn: Development).
