Joseph H. Landers
Joseph H. Landers 1934-2024
Joseph H. “Joe” Landers was a hero. The kind of hero movies are made of.
He wouldn’t tell you that, of course. But he would be happy to regale you with stories that, despite his humility, would make your heart leap with respect and admiration at his courage, bravery and love for his fellow human.
Under ridiculously difficult circumstances, and over many years, Joe saved countless lives in places like Korea, Vietnam, Rwanda, Haiti, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. He used cunning, imagination, wit and his 5th grade education to rise in the ranks of the US Air Force, obtain his teaching certificate and earn a position of respect and responsibility. This enabled him to make a difference in, and in many cases, change the course of, the lives of so many men, women and children…not only in his 10 year military career but also in his civilian and church life in Milford NH. This man literally saved countless lives and positively impacted so many more.
Joe was a champion of the underdog because he knew, first hand, what that felt like. But he also knew, first hand, that the right person could make a huge difference in the life of an underdog. And he chose, time and time again, to be that person.
We could publish an impressive list of the dates and accomplishments of his military service, the awards and honors he’s been presented and countless facts and figures that would spell out his amazing military and civilian careers. But you would never remember all of that. What we who loved him want you to remember is that he was one of the bravest, kindest, most generous and caring men we have ever known. And that is the accolade of which he would be most proud.
Joe leaves behind a loving son, Lee Landers of Houston, Texas and a myriad of friends who have been impacted by his love and unfailing generosity and kindness over these many years.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 18 at 11 am at First Congregational Church, 10 Union St., Milford with a time of fellowship immediately following in the Parish House.
Memorial donations may be made in his name to SHARE Outreach, 1 Columbus Ave., Milford NH 03055.
