Dr. N. John Fontana, II

Dr. N. John Fontana II, 90, a resident of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at Hannah Duston Healthcare Center in Haverhill surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in White River Junction, VT, November 7, 1932, and was the son of the late N. John and Stella (Jennis) Fontana, and the sister of the late Mary (Fontana) Donahue.

Dr. Fontana was raised in West Lebanon, NH and graduated from West Lebanon High School in 1950, and was drafted and served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1951-1953 when he was honorably discharged. He attended the University of Vermont, Class of 1958, and received his M.D. from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 1962. He was in private medical practice from 1965-1972 and from 1974-1990 in Nashua NH, where he was active at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He served on the Nashua School Board, and was the team physician for the Nashua High School football team for many years. From 1972-1974 he was a research and development executive with Eli Lilly & Co. in Indianapolis.

John leaves his first wife, Marily Herbers of Titusville FL, and his children, John Fontana III and his wife Katie of North Hampton, NH, Elaine Collins, and her husband John of Litchfield CT, and was predeceased by his youngest daughter Diane Tracy. Dr. Fontana has many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Sadly, he is predeceased by his wife Terry (Fassas) Fontana, and his youngest daughter Diane (Fontana) Tracy.
