Daniel Lee Holland

Nov 19, 2022

Daniel Lee Holland, age 90, a longtime resident of Nashua, passed away on November 7, 2022, after a period of declining health.

Daniel was born in Washington, Iowa on January 4, 1932, son of the late Lee Allen Holland & Gwendolen Myrtle (Long) Holland. He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Chemical Engineering, then served in the US Army from 1955 to 1958. After leaving the Army, he took a job with Archer-Daniels-Midland, working in the sales department. ADM brought him to Boston, where he went on to earn a Master of Science (Chemistry) and an MBA degree from Northeastern University.

In 1960, he met Deborah Dean Bartlett while scrubbing dishes after a Young Adults group meeting at Old South Church. She was charmed by his claim to be the Southeast Iowa Cribbage Champion, a title of which he was quite proud. They were married on September 9, 1961 in Bellows Falls, Vermont and settled in Nashua, New Hampshire. The couple were members of First Church of Nashua (UCC) for fifty years.

Dan worked as a chemical engineer at Sanders Associates for 37 years, eventually managing the Chem Lab on Canal Street. In addition to his work at Sanders, Dan was a lifelong learner and teacher. He taught mathematics and business classes at Rivier College, Daniel Webster College, and Merrimack Valley College.

Dan was always willing to lend a hand: delivering food to the Nashua Soup Kitchen, tutoring students at Nashua schools, and serving as a Deacon at the First Church. He served on the Citizen’s Advisory Commission for Community Grants (formerly Review & Comment), as well as a “Loaned Executive” with the Senior Corps of Retired Executives through United Way. He also devoted a great deal of time to Breakfast Exchange Club of Nashua.

In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, losing at card games, playing trombone in various local bands, traveling, and eating his nightly bowl of ice cream.

Daniel was predeceased by Deborah in 2013. He is survived by his children: Jared Holland and his wife Martha, of Nashua; Matthew Holland, of Concord; Benjamin Holland, of Nashua; and Susan Cooper and her husband Michael, of Nashua; as well as grandchildren Duncan, Andrew, Rebecca, Evan, Michael, Mary, Aurora, Christopher, and Graham; his sister Carolyn “Kay” Rothman and her husband Stephen, of West Palm Beach, Florida, and their sons Mark and Robert.

SERVICES: Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Monday Nov. 14, 2022 from 9:00 am until 10:45 am at the DAVIS FUNERAL HOME, One Lock St., Nashua, NH 03064.
