Brother Normand Roux, S.C.

Nov 5, 2022

BROTHER NORMAND ALPHONSE ROUX, S.C., (a.k.a. Brother Laurent), 88, a resident of Cumberland, RI, since 2021, died at Mount St. Rita Nursing Home on All Hallow’s Eve, October 31, 2022, at 9:45 AM. Brother Normand, son of the late Marie Belisle and Fernand Roux, was a native of Lewiston, ME. He joined the juniorate of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Winthrop, ME, and professed his first vows on August 15, 1950. After several years of scholasticate in Maine, Rhode Island and Alabama, Brother Normand earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL, in 1954 and made his final profession at Mount St. Charles in Woonsocket, RI, on August 24, 1956. Shortly after his perpetual vows, Brother Normand went on for further studies in Chemistry in 1958 at Oxford University in England.

Brother Normand had an outstanding career in the Brothers’ schools in the U.S. and England which spanned for 53 years. As a math and chemistry teacher par excellence and a phenomenal coach of several sports, Brother Norman ministered at Sacred Heart School in Sharon, MA; Mount St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, RI; St. Columba’s College in St. Albans, England; Msgr. McClancy Memorial H.S. in East Elmhurst, NY; and Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, NH. Always touched by their time with him, students were moved by Brother Normand’s breadth of knowledge, his passion to excel and his depth of caring. He was always there for them – be it for extra tutoring before or after school or at their sporting events or extra-curricular activities. Even in his retirement years, he would do anything he could to support the young people who moved his heart. Gentle and humble, Brother Normand led his Brothers and formed his students by his Christ-like example – and always with a warm and ready smile, a kind and encouraging word or simply by his calm and peaceful presence.

Brother Normand was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Anita (husband Richard) Langelier, and his sister-in-law Elsie Roux.

He is survived by his brothers Donald Roux and Roland (wife Lorie) Roux, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A wake will be held in the Brothers’ chapel in Pascoag (685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI 02859) on Saturday, November 12, beginning at 9:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated beginning at 10:30 AM. Following interment in the Brothers’ cemetery on the Pascoag grounds, a light lunch will be served in Coindre Hall in the Brothers’ residence.
