Melanie Ann (Swift) Marttila

Jun 28, 2022

Melanie Ann (Swift) Marttila, 79, of Nashua died on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at the Merrimack Community Hospice House following a courageous battle with uterine cancer. She was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, on April 17, 1943, to Orin Swift and Barbara (Cragin) Swift. She was the loving wife of William for more than 50 years. They were married in Boston on Aug. 14, 1971.

Melanie was a graduate of Brighton High School in Brighton, Massachusetts. Following high school, Melanie went on to attend Hickox Secretarial School. She then went on to work numerous secretarial positions in Boston, including the Boston Chamber of Commerce, Bennett Publishing and as an administrative assistant to the president of Mass Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

In 1971, she moved to Nashua with Bill. She worked at Sanders Data Systems Division for seven years prior to the birth of her daughter. She chose to remain at home during Heather’s early years. She filled her time with gardening, volunteering, baking, working out at the gym and, when Bill retired, they traveled extensively to attend Navy Ships reunions around the country.

Approximately four years ago, Melanie was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of uterine cancer. She fought vigorously with help from Lahey Clinic, St. Joseph’s Gospital, The Nashua Radiation Center, Dana Farber/Brigham in Boston, as well as Dana Farber in Londonderry and, at the end of her life, the Merrimack Community Hospice House. We would especially like to thank Dr. Susana Campos of Dana Farber in Boston for her world-class and compassionate care.

Survivors include her husband, Bill; and her daughter, Heather and her husband, Jonathan Butler, of Windham, New Hampshire. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Brett and Briah.

We would like to wish Melanie godspeed and peace and comfort at last.

Services: A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Davis Funeral Home, 1 Lock St. Nashua, N.H. Following visitation, a graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Edgewood Cemetery, 107 Amherst St., Nashua, N.H. 03064. Family and friends are invited to attend both.
