Lawrence R. Gilman

Lawrence R. Gilman, 86, of Essex, VT, passed away on January 30, 2022 in Essex, VT. He was born in New York City, NY, to the late Lawrence J. Gilman and Teresa (Katt) Gilman.

After serving in the Air Force during the Korean War, he worked for ITT. While working for ITT he traveled the world and lived in Italy and Puerto Rico. He then began working for Lockheed (formerly Sanders), and settled his family in Nashua. He retired from Lockheed after over 35 years of service. In his retirement he and his wife moved to Landaff, NH, where he lived until after his wife’s death. He then moved to Essex, VT, where he lived for the remainder of his life.

He was an avid outdoorsman and golfer, and enjoyed backyard birdwatching, gardening and woodworking. He was also a huge Civil War buff, and spent many hours reading his numerous books on the subject.

He is survived by his three children – Melissa (Douglas) Hoppes of Hillsborough, NC; Lawrence P. (Karey) Gilman of Oshkosh, WI, and Elizabeth Gilman of Essex, VT, as well as grandsons Sullivan Better and Lawrence P. Gilman, Jr. He is also survived by his four sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Verneta (Harris) Gilman.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring.
