Alyce M. (Kazlauskas) Henchey

Alyce M. (Kazlauskas) Henchey passed away peacefully with her daughters at her bedside in the Kaplan House in Danvers, Tuesday, January 4th, 2022. The former Principal of the George I Clapp Elementary School in the South End of Woburn was ninety-one years of age.

Born in Nashua NH, Alyce was one of three children born to the late Charles and Amelia (Ekavich) Kazlauskas. Raised and educated there, she was a graduate of Nashua High School along with the Class of 1948. Following high School Alyce continued with her education at Rivier College in New Hampshire where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Education.

Throughout the summers in high school and college and often spending summer vacations working at Hampton Beach. Here Alyce made some lifelong friends from Woburn, with whom she has remained friends with. Her position as a hostess at the Casino there also led to her meeting some of the most popular bands during that era.

In the mid-fifties, Alyce began her teaching career in her hometown of Nashua, where she remained for several years at the elementary level. Alyce, with here curious quest for travelling, went over to France, where she taught at on a military base and travelled throughout Europe while there.

Upon her return, she came to Woburn where she made her home, and began her family. She had the great pleasure of bringing two daughters into the world and they were a team! All throughout the years they were dedicated to each other. Visiting museums, attending plays, movies, fine dining and travelling all over the countryside and across the ocean, thoroughly enjoying each moment.

At the same time Alyce moved to Woburn she also secured herself a teaching position at the Clapp School. It is here that she taught for a little over a decade, eventually becoming the principal, where she remained for almost fifteen years. During her tenure she was well loved and respected by the families and educators throughout the system.

During her retirement Alyce had the very good fortune of again travelling, going to lunches, dinners and plays with friends and family. Throughout her life, Alyce always had a great sense of humor, and always enjoyed meeting people she didn’t know and striking up interesting conversations with them; she was also known for her generosity

Alyce was a very faith filled woman, which she shared with her daughters. St. Barbara Church was her church, and there she participated in all the activities including being a teacher CCD for a number of years.

Devoted mother of Julia Rose, her husband James of Salem and Rosemary Henchey of Woburn. Dear sister of Helene Gustafson, her husband Gary and their son Erik, of NY and the late Charles Kazlauskas.

A Funeral Celebration will be held in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn on Tuesday, January 11th at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to a Calling hour PRIOR to the Mass from 8:30-9:30 a.m., in the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home , 263 Main Street, Woburn. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made in Alyce’s honor to the Kaplan House c/o Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan Street, Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
