George Michael Scully

Sep 24, 2021

George Michael Scully of Rye, NH and Steuben, ME passed away suddenly April 11, 2020 at the age of 68.

He was born in Rochester, NH on October 13, 1951 to the late John and Marjorie (Creteau) Scully. He is survived by his wife Gesele (Torro) Scully, his brother, John Scully Jr., and his wife Rhonda. His brother-in-law and sister-in-law Peter and Susan (Torro) Demars, brother-in-law- and sister-in-law Steve and Amy Torro. His sister-in-law Kathryn Torro, his nieces and nephews Kristen (Scully) Kelley, Katherine (Scully) Maly and her husband Erik, Jay Scully, Dominick Torro, Tyler Demars, Maura (Demars) Sullivan and her husband Chris. Brittany Torro and Alexis Torro. Several great nieces and nephews.

George attended Lady Isle Elementary School. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and the University of New Hampshire.

George’s steady dose of happy was his wife, Gesele, his best friend of 30 years.

In his early working life George was a milkman and restaurant worker. After college he worked at several Seacoast restaurants honing his skills for what would later follow.

He owned and operated the Hannah Jack Tavern, “The Jack”, with his partner Dick Turgeon from 1978 to 2004.

The Hannah Jack Tavern was his world for many years. His talent and work ethic are what formed and shaped not only the success of the restaurant but also the lifelong friends that were made there.

From 1985 to 1998 George, along with Peter Selder, the restaurant’s manager, coordinated the Annual Hannah Jack Golf Tournament, an immensely popular event that benefited the NH Association for the Blind. It was supported and sponsored by several NH businesses over the years and raised thousands of dollars for this worthy organization. George was honored with their Person of the Year Award for his dedication and fundraising efforts.

After selling the Hannah Jack Tavern, George enjoyed working with Dave at Tamarack Landscaping. He loved the opportunity to be with friends; learning something new – and scoring a new T-shirt and sweatshirt with the Tamarack Logo, he just thought those sweatshirts were the best thing ever. He had a great T-shirt and hat collection assembled from the many vendors he knew from his years at the Hannah Jack Tavern.

His great niece, Nora, will tell you her Uncle George is in heaven playing with Spike, her family’s dog who passed away this past spring (and who coincidentally shared a birthday with George). Uncle George and Spiky are up there playing and laughing and ‘eating like animals.’

In closing Gesele asks that you keep the essence of her beautiful husband close to your heart. Always spread joy where you can, spread kindness, and always, always remember, “IT’S ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE.”

Services: A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Theresa’s Church, Rye, NH. Reception immediately following in the Parish Hall. All who knew him and loved him are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Down East Coastal Conservancy, P.O. Box 780, Machias, ME 04654.
