Stephen Gray Doyle
Stephen Gray Doyle, 68, of North Fort Myers, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2021 at Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, Florida. Steve was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, September 12, 1952 to the late John and Teresa (Gray) Doyle. He graduated from Lowell High School where he played both offense and defense on the undefeated Lowell High School football team that won the state championship in 1970. Steve’s football team was later inducted into the Lowell High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Steve enlisted in the United States Navy after high school. Steve served as a Gunner’s Mate in the Vietnam War from 1971-1975. It was in the Navy that Steve earned his nickname of ‘Gunner’ that stuck with him his adult life.
Steve and his loving wife, Dorinda, raised their family in Nashua, NH. He was a 20 year veteran of the Nashua Police Department where he retired as a Detective Lieutenant. He also served as President of the Police Union.
Running was one of Steve’s passions. He served a term as President of the Gate City Striders in Nashua where he also acted as race director for multiple road races. Steve ran and completed 16 Boston Marathons. He was also inducted into the Gate City Strider Hall of Fame.
Community service was important to Steve and he also served on the Board of Directors of the Nashua YMCA and the Nashua Police Athletic League.
After retirement, Steve and Dorinda moved to Florida to enjoy sunshine and golf. Steve was acting as President of the Men’s Golf Association in his community until shortly before his death.
Steve is survived by his wife of 42 years, Dorinda (Driver) Doyle, his son Benjamin and his wife, Amy (Mallette) Doyle and their children, Madeline, Emily, and Stephen. He is also survived by his daughter Natalie (Doyle) Corwin and her husband Robert, and their daughters, Catherine and Grace. Steve was predeceased by his sister Teresa Doyle Creamer, and is survived by his siblings Gayle Doyle Nichols, Jacquelyn Doyle O’Hare and Thomas O’Hare, Maura A. Englert and Mark Englert, brother Robert J. Doyle, and sister Patricia Norris and James Norris.
Reflecting on his life, Steve often said, “It’s been a good run”. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
