Frank Whittemore

Frank Whittemore of Hollis passed away peacefully in the night on February 22nd 2021. Frank was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on March 12, 1925 to Chester and Bridget McCarthy Whittemore. He lived in Nashua and Hudson before moving to Hollis his first year of High School. He very much impressed a young Hollis woman by the name of Eleanor Hardy with his good looks, work ethic (he walked 3 miles from his home to his job delivering milk every morning before school) and athletic abilities.

He enjoyed 78 years of marriage with Eleanor. As part owners of Brookdale Fruit Farm in Hollis, they not only raised a family together but also ran a successful family-owned business. Along with Frank’s many daily farming activities he devoted countless hours to the town of Hollis, serving on the Volunteer Fire Department, as a Library Trustee, the School Board which he chaired for five years, as a Selectman for 9 years, 3 of which he was Chair, as a State Representative, and he served on the Budget Committee for the town into his nineties. He was an active church participant at the Hollis Congregational Church and served as Treasurer for many years. Frank also served in the United States Army during World War II.

Aside from his work for the town he served on the Farm Credit Agency Board of Directors for the Federal Land Bank and was the recipient of numerous local and state awards for his participation and accomplishments in the agricultural field.

In addition to his beautiful wife, Eleanor, Frank is survived by his son Frank and his wife Lynne of Kensington, New Hampshire, his daughter Ruth Whittemore of Hollis, his daughter Joan and her husband Russ Marcum of Hollis; six grandchildren Marlyn Miller of Northampton, Massachusetts., Jason Miller and his wife Danelle of Las Vegas, Nevada, Patrick Sabatini and his wife Courtney of Franklin, Tennessee, Coleen Sabatini of Oakland, California, Kristen Sylvester of San Diego, California and Will Sylvester of Burlington, Massachusetts; and three great grandchildren, Elijah Miller of Northampton, Massachusetts, Ethan Miller of Santa Monica, California and Sawyer Lee Sabatini of Franklin, Tennessee. He also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. He always enjoyed family gatherings.

Frank always had a smile and a kind word for all who worked for and with him. He enjoyed his chosen farming career and working with the land. Frank loved a good joke and laughter was a way of life for him and his family.

Frank was predeceased by his youngest child, Lee Anne Sylvester, his sister Mildred Nadeau, and his brother Chester Whittemore.

Because of the pandemic, there will be no calling hours. A family graveside service will take place in the spring and a celebration of Frank’s long and wonderful life will be held at a future date.

Children should not have to go to bed hungry. As he was always committed to advancing the field of agriculture, there are thoughts of setting up a scholarship to help agricultural students at UNH at a later date.
