Hugh Allan MacGillivary

Hugh Allan (Al) MacGillivary of Mont Vernon, NH died peacefully at home in the loving care of his wife at the age of 75 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Al was predeceased by his parents, his siblings John, Alexander, James and Karen. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jean, his daughter and son-in-law Sarah & Mark MacDonald and their children Carter & Hayden, his son and daughter-in-law Matthew and Heather MacGillivary and their children Madyson and Wes, and his siblings Dayle MacGillivary, David MacGillivary, Rhonda Rocheleau and Mark Tomyl.

Al was born February 2, 1945 in Pictou, Nova Scotia. He moved to Cambridge, MA at four years old and lived in the Boston area until 1970. Al graduated from Ridge Tech High School in Cambridge, MA and joined the Pipefitter Union Local 537 where he completed a 5-year apprenticeship and training program. Al and Mary Jean married in 1966 and moved to New Hampshire in 1970 where they had their two children Sarah and Matthew. In the late 70’s Al and Mary Jean bought land in Mont Vernon. This inspired Al to take architecture courses and he designed and built their current home. They were passionate about conservation and in 1979 moved into their passive solar home and planted a large organic garden. Throughout the years, the large garden was traded in for blueberry bushes and wildflowers along with a full solar array; passionate about their home together and the environment.

Al’s work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit and confidence served him well in his career. He worked in the temperature control industry for many years before starting his own business, ATC Service.

Al loved cars and auto racing. He raced cars on and off until he was 70 enjoying the cars and time with fellow car guys. He enjoyed skiing, kayaking and the company of close friends. Al and Mary Jean loved to travel especially with family and their closest friends. Throughout the years and their many adventures Al’s wonderful, infectious laugh would get the group into a roar of hilarity.

Al was a beloved and adoring husband, supportive and loving father, and a proud grandfather who cherished his family with great joy and affection. Al touched the lives of all he came in contact with, was a straight shooter and a ton of fun who will be greatly missed.
