Jul 22, 2020

Betty A. Batey (Chizmar), 94 of Nashua passed away peacefully June 27, 2020 at the Elms Nursing Center in Milford, NH after a short period of declining health.

Mrs. Batey was born in Madison, Maine on September 19, 1925. She was one of seven children to John & Anne Chizmar, who emigrated from Eastern Europe early in the 20th century entering the US thru Ellis Island.  She married Norman H. Batey of Dexter Maine on November 27, 1947 in Pittsfield, Me. They were married for 53 years before Mr. Batey’s death in 2000.

Mrs. Batey started her work life young and at 16 worked part time at Frisbee Pie Factory. During WW2, she worked at Fay Scott Landis in Dexter making grenade launchers for the war effort. Mrs. Batey was proud of her earned title as a “Rosie the Riveter”.  She later attended secretarial school to learn typing and shorthand. Mr. Batey returned to his old place of work at Fay Scott Landis Machine Shop after serving in France and Germany during WW2 meeting Mrs. Batey at Fay Scott where she now worked as a secretary.

The couple had 3 sons. The Batey family moved from Dexter to Nashua in 1967. In Nashua Mrs.Batey became involved in helping her boys adjust to a much larger city after moving from rural Maine. That included new schools, assisting with a newspaper route that all 3 boys eventually worked, as well as balancing her boys home work assignments and sports with their part time jobs at The Modern Restaurant in Nashua. For a while she worked at Deering Ice Cream in Nashua as a waitress and eventually operated a Fashion 220 then Lady Finelle home cosmetic business. Mrs. Batey was a neighborhood volunteer for the American Cancer Society for many years. She was very proud of the fact her three sons all attained college degrees along with her six grandchildren.

Mrs. Batey enjoyed swimming in her outdoor pool and did so into her 80s.  She enjoyed walking, home gardening, dancing, playing ping pong, bowling, and watching the activity around her. She was an excellent seamstress like her mother from “the old country” and loved fashion. Later in life, Mrs Batey overcame her fear of flying and went on many enjoyable trips with her late husband Norman. After his death she continued to fly visiting family in Colorado and Florida. She took a cruise to Bermuda and travelled  to Las Vegas where she discovered she enjoyed playing the slots.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Batey was predeceased by her parents, brothers Michael Chizmar and John Chizmar, sisters Margaret Goodwin, Anne Otis and Mary Lessard.

Mrs. Batey is survived by her 3 sons Alan Batey ( Marilyn Prost, Lt Col US Army Retired ) from Colorado Springs, CO, Dale Batey, Cmdr, US Navy Retired ( Margaret Batey ) of Key West, FL / Sullivan, Me, and Scott Batey  ( Steve Conley ) of Hyde Park, MA and one sister Ellen Collins of Barboursville, WV.
