Gloria A. Levesque

Gloria A. (Gaudreau) Levesque, 93, of Nashua, died Tuesday, April 14, 2020, at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center after a short illness.

Born in New Bedford, Mass., on March 13, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Alfred G. and Alma (Leblanc) Gaudreau. She graduated from the former St. Anthony High School of New Bedford in 1945, a member of the school’s second graduating class. At one time she was a telephone operator with New England Telephone & Telegraph in Wareham, Mass.

She married Maurice J. Levesque, then of Hudson, NH, on October 18, 1947, in St. Joseph Church, New Bedford, and resided in Hudson for the next 12 years, moving to Nashua in 1959 when her husband took over the operation of A. Levesque & Son Plumbing and Heating from his father. The family lived on Crown Hill in Nashua for 42 years. Since 2010, she has resided at Benchmark Senior Living at Nashua Crossing, where she has served on many committees, including welcoming and music.

A communicant of Infant Jesus Church (now St. John XXIII Parish) in Nashua since her marriage, Mrs. Levesque belonged to the Ladies of St. Anne and the Ladies of Charity of the parish, which she also served as leader of Girl Scout Troop #3 for several years. She was involved in city politics for more than 25 years, serving Ward 7 as ballot inspector, selectman and then moderator, completing her final term in 1988, when Mr. Levesque retired from the plumbing and heating business. They then moved to Crystal River, Fla., where they resided for 22 years before returning to Nashua in May 2010.

A member of Hudson Unit #48, American Legion Auxiliary, since her marriage, she served as unit president and District #2 Director, and held all department (state) offices until her election as Department President during the Bicentennial year 1975-1976. At her testimonial, she received a life membership to her unit in recognition of her many years of dedicated service. She also performed volunteer work at the Manchester Veterans Administration Medical Center for many years.

For several years Mrs. Levesque was a member and secretary of Nashua’s Henri T. Ledoux Council of L’Union St. Jean-Baptiste. She and her husband spent 20 summers at Shellcamp Lake in Gilmanton and were summer communicants of St. Joseph Church in Belmont, belonging to its 300 Club until its dissolution last year. In Florida she belonged to St. Benedict Church in Crystal River, where she and her husband were active in the Parish Homebound ministry, serving as extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist. They were also members of the Pillar Society in Lecanto, Fla.

She and her husband celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in October 2012, less than a year before his death in July 2013.

Survivors are two daughters, Diane R. Levesque of Alexandria, Va., and Jeannine T. Levesque of Nashua. A middle daughter, Louise J. (Levesque) Hills, and her husband, Air Force Staff Sgt. George C. Hills III, died together in a private plane crash in 1973. A twin sister, Therese Gaudreau, died in 1928. Mrs. Levesque is also predeceased by her brothers George A. Gaudreau in 2008, Paul M. Gaudreau in 2001, Roger W. Gaudreau in 2015, and her sister JoAnn (Gaudreau) Mathie Zuckerman in 2015. Besides her two daughters, she is survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as two godchildren, Susan Gaudreau of New Bedford and Linda (Pelkey) Pygon of South Carolina.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, a family-only burial service will be held at the old St. Louis de Gonzague Cemetery. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John XXIII Parish at Infant Jesus Church, 121 Allds St., Nashua, at a future date.
