Matthew F. Judge

Matthew Francis Judge, Korean War Veteran and longtime NH resident, passed away Jan. 16, 2019, at the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Jaffrey, NH, surrounded by family.

Born Oct. 21, 1934 in Swampscott, MA, to the late-Bernard (Lt. Col., US Army, Ret.) & the late-Catherine (Romanowicz) Judge, of Peabody, MA, he attended Peabody schools & graduated from St. John’s Prep High School in Danvers, MA, in 1952.

Mr. Judge joined the US Army in 1952. Deployed to Korea during the Korean War, he served mostly with the 17th Inf/7th Div. He fought on Pork Chop Hill & reached Sgt 1st Class on active duty. After returning home, he transferred to the National Guard, earning his 2nd Lt commission.

Mr. Judge earned a BA in Business from Boston College and a Master’s in Education from Salem State College. He then began a long career as an independent salesman.

In 1961, Mr. Judge married Janice Calder, daughter of the late-Daniel & the late-Mary (McCarthy) Calder, of Peabody, MA. They had three children together: Matthew Francis, Jr. in Feb. 1962; Mark Bernard in Dec. 1963, who passed away Apr. 1964; and, Daniel Calder in Aug. 1972.

In 1997, Mr. Judge retired from the sales business. He then worked for the Post Office, retiring in 2013.

Mr. Judge enjoyed Manchester Monarchs hockey games and reading current events & history.

Mr. Judge is survived by Janice, his wife of 57 years & also a resident of Good Shepherd; son Matthew, Jr., & granddaughter Angela Addington of Bennington, NH; son Daniel, daughter-in-law Bethany (Popham) Judge & granddaughter Isabella Caruso, of Pepperell, MA; former daughter-in-law Jennifer (Powers) Judge & grandson Christopher Judge of Londonderry, NH; a sister, Janice (Judge) & brother-in-law the late-Charles Fox of Waltham, MA; brother-in-law George Caley of FL; & several nieces & nephews. He was also predeceased by two sisters: Joy (Judge) Clark of FL & Maureen (Judge) Reinstein-along with brother-in law Hon. William Reinstein-of Revere, MA; and sister-in-law Carole (Calder) Caley of FL.

A memorial service will be held Aug 31, 2019 from 3-7pm at the Merrimack, NH, VFW Post 8641. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either Good Shepherd Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, St. Jude’s Hospital, Shriners Hospitals, Toys for Tots, St. John’s High School, or the 17th Infantry Assn.
