Roger S. Wales

Feb 10, 2019

Roger S. Wales, longtime resident of Nashua, NH died peacefully surrounded by family on Sat. Feb.2, 2019 at the age of 92.

Born in Cambridge, MA on June 24, 1926, he was the son of Ralph and Betty Wales.

As a US Navy veteran, Roger served during WWII in the Pacific Theatre and then went on to receive his degree at Harvard College in 1950.

After college, he soon married and later moved to Reading, MA raising four daughters. He spent his entire career working as an underwriter for American Mutual Insurance Co. in Wakefield, MA.

A quiet and humble man, Roger possessed a true love for nature. In retirement, he lovingly volunteered many years monitoring and tending the hiking trails at Beaver Brook in Hollis and at the Wales Preserve, a pristine, family-donated parcel of land now overseen by The Nature Conservancy in Sharon.

Roger was an avid gardener and when people would inquire how his vegetables were coming along, he often joked by replying dryly, “The weeds are doing well!” Throughout his life, Roger enjoyed outdoor activities including: tennis, hiking, biking, swimming, ice skating, skiing and jogging. As a strong environmentalist, he fiercely supported organizations that worked to protect our planet.

He is survived by his four daughters: Carol Ripley of Alstead, NH, Amy Wales of Montpelier, VT, Sarah Wales of Andover, NJ, Marcy Davala of Manchester, NH. He also leaves behind four grandsons. Roger was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Davis Wales.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. A private memorial will be held in the spring at the family preserve in Sharon, NH.
