Alan D. Carswell

May 20, 2018

A true American hero, Alan D. Carswell, 93, peacefully passed away on April 8, 2018, after a long, full, happy and adventurous life. Alan was born to Ralph Clinton Carswell and Ester Belle Carswell on August 5, 1924. Alan was predeceased by his wife Minnie and sons David and Daniel. He was also predeceased by two brothers and a sister. Alan grew up as a child of the depression, learning to work hard and never give up. As a young man, he worked many jobs which included janitorial work at a department store where he first met the love of his life, Minnie. As a patriot, Alan joined the Army and served as an infantryman in WWII. Severely wounded in action leading up to the Battle of Bulge in Belgium, he was honored with a Purple Heart for his valor. Upon his return home, by chance, he met Minnie in a local coffee shop, courted her relentlessly and won her hand in marriage. Alan and Minnie married April 26, 1947 and shared a life full of love, challenge and adventure for 64 years. Having huge hearts and a love for children, they adopted and raised two beautiful boys David and Daniel.

After being honorably discharged from the military, Alan worked in the Manchester and Merrimack Post Office for many years, ending with retirement from the Merrimack office as Postmaster. He, Minnie and the boys enjoyed life at Baboosic Lake where water sports, laughter and fresh donuts ruled the days. They loved spending time with the Cleveland family at the lake, on f family outings and at York Beach, Maine and Deering Lake where they spent many summers in their later years.

Alan was a great story teller and everyone was captivated by his stories of WWII, his love for Minnie and his great sense of humor. He made the effort to greet everyone by name and was an inspiration to all who crossed his path. Alan leaves many nieces, nephews, a granddaughter, and extended family.

His farewell message to all was a favorite quote:

“‘If my parting has left a void, then fill it with

remembered joy.

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss.

Ah, yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,

For I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.'”
