James A. Connor

James A. Connor, 81, of Manchester, NH, died February 11, 2018, after of a period of declining health.

Born in Manchester, NH, on September 28, 1936, he was the son of U.S. District Judge Aloysius Connor and Beatrice (Bisson) Connor.

James was educated in local public and parochial schools. He graduated from Bishop Bradley High School, Class of 1954. James earned a bachelor of arts degree, cursu honoris, from the College of the Holy Cross in 1958. Thereafter, he earned a juris doctor degree from Boston College Law School.

During his high school and college years, James became an accomplished woodwind musician who played both saxophone and clarinet. For a number of years, he held membership in the American Federation of Musicians, Local No. 349.

Following his graduation, James was elected as Manchester Ward 3 representative to the 1964 Constitutional Convention. Early in his career, James was a special assistant attorney general in Concord, NH. In 1965, he was appointed the first assistant county attorney and later served as elected Hillsborough County Attorney for six years. He also held the position of bail commissioner in the City of Manchester. Afterwards, he practiced law on individual basis for fifty years. Attorney Connor ran for governor of New Hampshire in the Democratic primary of 1976, while at same time acting as a presidential elector. James and his late father, Aloysius Connor, provided legal services for a total of ninety-seven years.

James was a member of the Joliette Club, Rye Beach Club, Royal Geographical Society, as well as many charitable organizations. James was also active in many political campaigns. He served as school board moderator in the Town of Weare.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Kathryn Stockbridge Connor, as well as a brother, Robert E. Connor, of New York City.

Family members include his wife of thirty years, Joan M. Connor; three sons, Sean A. Connor and his wife, Karen Murray, of San Francisco, CA, Jamie Connor of Bangkok, Thailand and Manila City, Philippines, and Justin Connor of Los Angeles, CA; two grandchildren, Niall Connor and Eamon Connor, both of San Francisco; two sisters, Dr. Hannah Tyson, of Baltimore, Maryland, and Ellen Connor-Stahl, of Hollis.

Services: Calling hours are Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at the Connor-Healy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 537 Union Street, Manchester, NH.

The funeral will be held Friday with a mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 10 AM in Saint Joseph Cathedral, Pine Street, Manchester, NH.

Burial will take place in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, NH.
