Spiro James Pitarys

Spiro James Pitarys, 97, of Nashua and Brooksville FL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 15, 2015, at his home in Florida.

Spiro was born in Nashua on September 18, 1918, a son of the late James and Catherine (Gamalia) Pitarys. He was the widower of Lois (Ermalovich) Pitarys, who died in 1984.

Spiro honorably served our country with the U.S. Army, 34th division, 36th Field Artillery during WWII. Spiro was the first Nashuan to be discharged under the point system. Needing only 72 points, Spiro accumulated 105. Spiro obtained seven battle stars from five major invasions during WWII. Spiro had worked numerous jobs including the Ford Motor Co. in Mass., Brown’s Dairy, the Nashua Mills as a doffer, Moraros Laundry and prior to retirement, he worked as a manager at the New Hampshire State Liquor Store. He was very proud to be a member of St. Philip Greek Orthodox Church. He would often volunteer there doing anything that was needed. Spiro was very charitable and donated to several charitable organizations. Spiro was predeceased by two sons, Robert Birkmaier, Philip Birkmaier; six brothers, Steve, Christo, Thomas, Soterios, Harry and Matthew; two sisters, Evangeline Sweeney and Alice Modeski; as well as his longtime companion, Thelma Wyrwicz.

Spiro is survived by two daughters, Sandra Faucher and Paula Pitarys, both of Nashua; one brother, Alexander Pitarys of Lewiston, ME; one sister, Helen Dabilis of Nashua; also several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

SERVICES: Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, November 22, 2015 in the Anctil-Rochette & Son Funeral Home, 21 Kinsley Street Nashua, NH 03060, from 4 to 8 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, November 23, 2015 in St. Philip’s Greek Orthodox Church, 500 West Hollis Street Nashua, at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boston Children’s Hospital, 401 Park Dr. Suite 602 Boston, MA 02215 or St. Philip’s Greek Orthodox Church, 500 West Hollis Street Nashua, NH 03062.
