Daniel von Recklinghausen

Daniel von Recklinghausen, 86, of Hudson, New Hampshire died at the Fairview Nursing Home on Monday morning, August 22, 2011.

He was born in New York City on January 22, 1925, a son of the late Maximilian and Elsa (Matusch) von Recklinghausen.

He was raised in Munich, Germany as his family moved back here at a young age. He served in the German resistance and was imprisoned from ages 16-19 during World War II.

After Germany was liberated by the Allies, he returned to the United States and graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi and Eta Kappa Nu fraternities.

Prior to his retirement he was employed as a research audio engineer at H.H. Scott. He was named Chief Research Engineer in 1955 and Technical Director in 1969.

Mr. von Recklinghausen worked at Electro Audio Dynamics in 1973. In 1975, he was appointed Vice President of Research and Development for KLH, where he patented computer controlled loudspeakers. Additionally, he led the development of the Audiometer for American Electromedics and Membrane loudspeakers (DvR tweeter) for Infinity.

He was a member of the National Stereophonic Radio Committee, a member and named fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) in 1967 for contributions in the field of high fidelity music reproduction (FM Stereo). He was a member of the Audio Engineering Society, an elected fellow in 1962, served as president in 1967 and the journal editor from 1991-2004. Daniel received the Gold Medal in 1978 for outstanding achievement and contributions in the field of FM receiver technology, and the Lifetime Achievement award in 2005.

He was known to give advice to those in the audio field, “If it measures good and sounds bad, it is bad; if it measures bad and sounds good, you’ve measured the wrong thing.”

He received the Outstanding Young Men of Greater Boston from the Boston Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1960. He was an author of numerous articles and publications and held 24 patents. Daniel was an avid photographer who took over 10,000 pictures in his lifetime. He also was a member of the New England Cruiser Association and an official observer of predicted log yacht races.

In addition to his wife Carolyn of 51 years, survivors include two sons, Friedrich and his wife Juliana of Newbury, NH and Christoph of Nashua, NH; two grandchildren, Daniel of Boston, MA and Tatiana of Ottawa, ON; a sister, Marianne Bowles of Falls Church, VA; a nephew, David von Recklinghausen Bowles of Berkeley, CA and a niece, Margaret (Bowles) Price of New Fairfield, CT.
