CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) — A shooting near a basketball court at a Central Falls park left one man dead and another seriously injured, police said.

Officers responding to 911 calls for shots fired went to Sacred Heart Park just before 9 p.m. Tuesday where they found Malcolm Sostre, 28, on the ground with gunshot wounds, police said in a statement.

He was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The second victim, a 19-year-old man, had fled the park area but was found a short distance away with a single gunshot wound to the head. He was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital, and although his injuries are serious he was expected to recover, police said.

His name was not made public and he is not considered a suspect.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive or announced any arrests.

Mayor Maria Rivera in a statement called the shootings “unfathomable.”

“There are no words that will take back last night’s senseless violence, or the irreparable damage and heartache this has caused their families and friends,” she said.
