BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts is making more than $46 million in grants to support a dozen shovel-ready housing projects across the state that will bring create hundreds of new affordable units.

Of the 572 new units, 507 are considered affordable, and 108 will be reserved for extremely low-income households, according to a statement this week from the Department of Housing and Community Development.

The awards will provide a combination of state and federal housing tax credits, state and federal rental vouchers, and direct funds to support new housing development.

“This public health crisis has exposed how vulnerable our working and low-income families are, and ensuring stable housing is vital,” Housing and Community Development Undersecretary Jennifer Maddox said in a statement. “As we continue to expand our Eviction Diversion Initiative, keeping a healthy pipeline of new affordable developments is a critical investment in our future.”

The grants will support 12 affordable housing developments in eight communities: Acton, Attleboro, Boston, Chelsea, Great Barrington, Salem, Taunton and Wareham.
