State smooths license transfer process for military families

BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Charlie Baker has signed an executive order making it easier for military personnel and their spouses to continue their civilian careers when they are transferred to Massachusetts military installations.
The order signed this week directs the Division of Professional Licensure to improve license portability by participating in interstate compacts that simplify licensing for professionals moving between states, while also ensuring the public continues to be served by qualified practitioners.
The agency will also encourage licensing boards to process applications within 30 days, and track data on how long that process takes for military personnel and families.
Some of the professionals covered by the order include physical therapists, accountants, engineers, psychologists, barbers and cosmetologists.
The Baker administration has previously undertaken efforts to improve license portability for military families who hold out-of-state licenses in teaching and nursing.
Massachusetts is home to six military installations with more than $13.2 billion in total economic activity and support for more than 57,600 jobs.
