Barn at animal shelter built in honor of former volunteer

By Staff | Feb 2, 2021

EXETER, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island animal welfare organization is building a new barn on its property in honor of a former volunteer who was struck and killed by a vehicle while out walking her dog.

The barn being built by Friends of Exeter Animals is being constructed in honor of Sarah Balmforth, WPRI-TV reported.

Amy Almeida, treasurer for the nonprofit, said the 27-year-old Balmforth “was just an amazing person.”

She was struck in Exeter in July 2017 by a driver who authorities say then left the scene. The case is pending.

“It’s been four years, and it is time to bring justice for Sarah,” Almeida said. “We are all missing her so deeply, and we feel the family has been through enough. Having to attend court just reminds them of that life taken, that terrible tragedy.”

The base of the barn is done, but Almeida said there’s still plenty of work to do inside. She said they’re hopeful they’ll be able to host an opening ceremony once it’s completed this summer.

Almeida said the barn will be used to house animals brought to the shelter.
