Suspect in Boston Public Garden rape held without bail
BOSTON (AP) — A man charged with raping a woman in the Boston Public Garden has been held without bail pending a hearing to determine whether he is a danger to society.
Francisco Romero, 38, of Chelsea, was held at his arraignment Wednesday after not guilty pleas to charges of aggravated rape, kidnapping, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon were entered on his behalf.
The woman was walking across the Public Garden in the early morning hours of Nov. 8 after attending a party when a man approached her and asked her if she needed a ride, the prosecutor said in court.
The woman told police the man grabbed her around the waist and carried her to another area where he raped her, the prosecutor said.
Romero was identified as a suspect by someone who recognized him from surveillance images posted by authorities, and by the victim who picked him out of a photo array as someone who resembled her attacker.
Romero’s attorney, Mike Reinhardt, questioned the validity of the photo identification. “None of these are really solid identifications,” he said.
A dangerousness hearing was scheduled for Nov. 25.
