Hampshire College buoyed by $5M matching gift from alumni
AMHERST, Mass. (AP) — Hampshire College has received a $5 million matching gift from two alumni, which is the largest single gift in the history of the school.
Donors Paula and James Crown committed to matching donations from other alumni as part of the “Founder’s Challenge,” the Daily Hampshire Gazette reported on Wednesday.
The matching gift asks alumni of the first five entering classes to give to the school as Hampshire celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
The college has raised almost $20 million as part of the five-year, $60 million fundraising campaign, Hampshire President Ed Wingenbach told the newspaper. The gift puts the school on track to meet its goal by 2024, he said.
“To get a gift of this size at this time is a very clear validation of the solidity and sustainability of our plans for the future,” Wingenbach said.
In 2019, Hampshire considered seeking a merger and said it would not admit a full class because of financial strain. The school’s president resigned in April of that year.
