Maine woman attempting to swim around Mount Desert Island

By Staff | Aug 29, 2020

BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) — A Maine woman is launching an attempt to swim around Mount Desert Island.

Bar Harbor resident Puranjot Kaur is kicking off the 43.6 -mile (70-kilometer) swim on Friday. If she succeeds, she’ll become the first person to have done so, the Bangor Daily News reports.

The Rhode Island native is calling it the ” Round the Rock Swim.” It’ll take an estimated 24 hours.

The swim will take her through Bar Harbor, past the Cranberry Islands, over the tricky sandbar at Bass Harbor and through the many islands that dot the western edge of MDI.

A team of boaters and sea kayakers will be accompanying her. Along the way, she’ll deal with boat traffic, tides and jellyfish.

Kaur is swimming coach for the Mount Desert Island YMCA Sharks swim team. With the YMCA pool closed, she’s been taking her team to Echo Lake in Acadia National Park to train with her.
