Maine bank giving grants to Portland library, nonprofits

By Staff | Jun 29, 2020

MACHIAS, Maine (AP) — A Maine bank is giving out $100,000 in grants to community groups, including the Portland Public Library.

Machias Savings Bank said the grants are designed to “build resilience for Maine’s businesses.” The grants are going to nonprofit organizations that serve businesses, representatives for the bank said.

A $10,000 award is designated for the Portland Public Library, which has shifted to an online format since the coronavirus pandemic began. Machias Savings Bank said the funding will help pay for staffing expenses that stem from an increased need for business-related support programming.

Another $5,000 grant is slated for Sunrise County Economic Council to provide virtual training for small businesses in Washington County.
