Main Street in Vermont town to be closed for construction

By Staff | Jun 29, 2020

PUTNEY, Vt. (AP) — Main Street in a Vermont town is going to be closed for construction during two weeks in July.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports work has already begun on the Route 5 bridge over Sacketts Brook in Putney, but starting July 6, the road will be closed to remove the bridge’s concrete deck in preparation for installing a new one.

During the two weeks of closure, drivers will be asked to use Interstate 91 to get around the closure. But some residents are concerned motorists might use Sand Hill Road instead.

Putney Town Manager Karen Astley says the town’s contracted deputy from the Windham County Sheriff’s Department would be spending most if not all of his time monitoring the road for speed and weight loads.

“We know how sensitive the Sand Hill area is,” she said. “We are going to try to minimize traffic the best we can.”
