Rhode Island has won a $65 million federal grant to fund an overhaul Route 146, the state’s congressional delegation said Tuesday.

U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Reps. Jim Langevin and David Cicilline said the “Infrastructure for Rebuilding America” grant will pay for the replacement of multiple bridges along the Route 146 corridor, the repaving of roadway and other improvements.

Reed called Route 146 “one of the most problematic stretches of road in the state” and said it’s “in dire need of repair.”

“Route 146, with all of its bumps and quirks, is the main thoroughfare for Rhode Islanders who live in the northern part of the state. I’m thrilled that we have the funds in hand to create good jobs upgrading Route 146 with new bridges, a modern design, and miles of fresh pavement,” Whitehouse said in an emailed statement.
