At least 4 injured in fire; possible explosion reported

By Staff | May 30, 2020

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — A fire tore through a central Connecticut home Friday morning, sending at least four people to the hospital while investigators tried to determine whether there was an explosion.

Fire officials in Middletown said the blaze was reported shortly before 6:30 a.m. in a rural area along Saybrook Road. At least one 911 caller reported hearing what sounded like an explosion, but authorities could not immediately confirm if there was a blast, said South Fire District Chief Michael Howley.

Howley said he had no information on the victims’ conditions, but they did not include any children.

Firefighters from several other departments responded to the blaze, which destroyed the home.

Medical helicopters were requested, but officials said weather conditions prevented them from flying to the scene. Dense fog was reported in the area.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
