State police respond to dozens of crashes during winter storm

CONCORD – Sections of multiple major interstates and roadways were temporarily closed due to crashes during the winter storm that began Sunday and continued moving through the region this morning.
Between 3 p.m. yesterday and 9 a.m. today, the New Hampshire State Police responded to 98 reported crashes and vehicles off the road, as well as 18 disabled vehicles. Many of the crashes this morning involved three or more vehicles. No serious injuries were reported.
As a result of crashes, between 6 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. today, sections of Interstate 95, Interstate 93, the Spaulding Turnpike, Route 101, and the F.E. Everett Turnpike were temporarily closed. All roads have since fully reopened.
The State Police remind drivers that road conditions can change rapidly during winter weather events and encourage those who choose to travel to maintain safe speeds that allow for increased reaction times. Drivers should also keep appropriate distance from other vehicles, including plow trucks, to prevent collisions.
Drivers are also reminded of state laws requiring them to give plenty of space to first responders on the side of the road and to clear their vehicles of snow and ice before driving. RSA 265:37-a, commonly known as the Move Over law, requires drivers to slow down, move out of lanes that are partially or wholly blocked, and give plenty of space to emergency response vehicles displaying red, blue or amber lights. RSA 265:79-b, commonly known as Jessica’s Law, requires drivers to remove snow and ice from their vehicles before traveling. Violators are subject to fines or additional penalties for subsequent offenses.
