Bridges by EPOCH hosts first annual dog show
NASHUA – Twelve dogs, donning patriotic garb, dazzled residents at Bridges by EPOCH during the facility’s first annual dog show on July 21.
“Dogs bring joy and comfort to many of our residents and we pride ourselves on creating smiles through fun and exciting interactions,” said Executive Director Michelle Pelham. “Our dog show was just one example of the many great programs and experiences we offer to our seniors, families and team members.”
She said the event was spearheaded by Senior Advisor Colleen Everett, who had organized dog shows at other Bridges locations.
“Throughout the parade, the residents had the opportunity to pat and greet each doggy participant,” said Everett, adding that the dogs all received treats and blue ribbons at the end of the show.
Pelham said the show featured Pom-Chows, Poodle mixes, a Terrier, Labrador mixes and even a Great Dane puppy.
In addition to the entertainment value, Pelham said dog therapy continues to be a major benefit for her residents.
“I have watched residents just come to life with dog therapy. They start reminiscing about former pets they had or just become so impassioned about how adorable, soft, cute and cuddly they are,” said Pelham. “Studies have shown that petting an animal has great calming properties, decreases heart rate and increases endorphins. They are a bridge that connects the residents to their families.”
Although therapy dogs can come from any breed, some of the more common breeds include Labrador Retrievers, Poodles, Golden Retrievers and Newfoundlands, according to US Service Animals.
