Secretary of State issues warning over email scam that targets small businesses

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Reporter | Apr 21, 2023

CONCORD — The office of Secretary of State Michael Scanlan issued a warning Thursday regarding an email scam in which perpetrators contact LLCs and offer to file their overdue annual reports for a fee that is considerably higher than the $50 the state charges for late filings.

Scanlan’s office “has received several reports of emails from an entity offering to file annual reports for New Hampshire-registered LLCs that have missed the filing deadline,” according to the statement issued by the SOS office.

“These emails are not from the Secretary of State’s office. Those who receive them should report it to the office immediately at corporate@sos.nh.gov.

“Customers who have been charged by this entity should also report it to the Consumer Protection and Antitrust Bureau at www.doj.nh.gov/consumer/complaints/index.htm,” according to the statement.

LLCs registered in New Hampshire can still file their annual reports for a $50 fee using the Secretary of State’s QuickStart system: NHQS.
