NASHUA — The United Way of Greater Nashua would like to hear from anyone who has two hours to spare on a Saturday or a Sunday about joining the team of volunteers who collect food supplies each weekend on behalf of various agencies in Greater Nashua.

The United Way “would love your help collecting supplies at a community food drive or a women’s hygiene supplies drive,” the agency said in a statement.

Weekly food drives take place at stores throughout Greater Nashua, and supply pantries that serve the community in which that week’s store is located.

Volunteers ask interested shoppers to consider purchasing extra items to donate.

The women’s hygiene supply drives take place on the second Sunday of each month at the Hannaford supermarket on Coliseum Avenue in Nashua and on the third Sunday of the month at the Hannaford store on Derry Street in Hudson.

Volunteer shifts for both drives run from 10 a.m. to noon and from noon to 2 p.m.

United Way’s food drives can generate up to 300 pounds of food per drive – the equivalent of 360 meals. Support from volunteers and donors makes a huge difference to people in the community who rely on food supports from our local pantries.

Some of the pantries served include the Nashua Community College Student Assistance Pantry, Milford SHARE Outreach, St. John Neumann Food Pantry in Merrimack, the Hudson Food Pantry, the Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter, and End 68 Hours of Hunger.

Thanks to the community’s generosity at the hygiene supply drives, United Way is not only able to stock its free Rosie’s Pantry cabinet at Nashua’s Girls Inc. with hygiene items, but they are also able to help fill cabinets at Mount Pleasant and Ledge Street elementary schools, Pennichuck Middle School, Nashua High School South, and Clearway High School.

Some of the schools have requested that some types of items — such as leggings, underwear, laundry supplies and the book “The Care and Keeping of You” — not be donated at the drives, but thanks to monetary donations received at the drives, the United Way has been able to purchase these items and pass them on to the benefactor agencies.
