NRWA Nashua River Junior Scientist Program

By The Associated Press - | Feb 4, 2023

Calling all junior scientists and nature lovers! The Nashua River Watershed Association is offering a FREE school vacation week program for Nashua youth ages 10-14 years. The program runs February 27 (Monday) through March 2 (Thursday) from 9 am to 1 pm in the Nashua Public Library activity room. Come join us for an exciting week of winter fun and learning!

With the river as their ìoutdoor laboratoryî, the junior scientists will explore river issues using exciting hands-on activities related to river ecology and watershed protection while considering this important resource through the lens of climate change. The children will engage in hands-on science activities including interactive models, science experiments, wildlife exploration with animal tracking all while learning about the effects of climate change on our river and city.

Each morning, two NRWA educator naturalists will lead the group on a guided walk outdoors to the banks of the nearby Nashua River and return to the library to integrate their discoveries and test results. The ìJunior Scientistsî will then design their own solutions for protecting the Nashua and Merrimack Rivers in the future. Using a variety of natural and recycled materials, they will create a 3-D model of the section of the confluence of the two rivers and incorporate their inventions into the model to be displayed in the childrenís room during the month of March.

Space is limited; registration is required. To register or inquire further, please contact NRWA Education Director Stacey Chilcoat at registration@nashuariverwatershed.org.

This program is funded in part by the Merrimack Conservation Partnership and the Brian S. McCarthy Foundation.

The NRWA is a non-profit environmental organization providing water and land protection, and environmental education programs to 32 watershed communities, including Nashua. Learn more at www.NashuaRiverWatershed.org.
