MANCHESTER — The man’s injuries were relatively minor, but the process of removing him from the woods to take him to a local hospital was a bit more complicated.

It was around 8 a.m. Monday that firefighters and AMR ambulance personnel responded to a call for help at a homeless camp near the railroad tracks in the city’s North End.

The caller who notified authorities advised that there was a patient at the camp that had burns and needed medical assistance. Crews arrived near the end of Victoria Street and walked along the railroad tracks looking for the victim.

Dispatchers worked to locate the victim by speaking to someone who was with him. When rescuers reached the 34-year-old man they determined he had a burn injury to his foot, along with other injuries unrelated to the burn.

Based on the man’s injuries and the difficult terrain leading to where he was, the decision was made to request additional manpower and equipment to the scene.

Engine 6 responded to the area of Chauncey Avenue with the fire department’s “Gator,” a 4-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicle able to travel off-road and over rough terrain.

The Gator was driven to the wooded area along the tracks, at which time medical personnel and firefighters assisted him into the vehicle.

Fire department Capt. Peter Franggos said the area where the man was located is one of many homeless encampments the department’s Outreach Team visits on a frequent basis.

The services the team provides allow firefighters to document the location of encampments and provide requested items such as hand warmers, gloves, and hats.

The victim, whose name was not released, was transported to a local hospital for medical attention to what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
