MANCHESTER — The Currier Museum of Art is proud to announce that Lorenzo Fusi is joining its leadership team as Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art.

Fusi will advance the museum’s mission of connecting the community with art, and help make the Currier Museum a catalyst for positive change in its region.

“We are thrilled to welcome Lorenzo Fusi, a highly respected international curator,” said Alan Chong, director and CEO of the Currier Museum of Art. “He has considerable experience in nurturing innovative artists from around the world, and even more important, has connected those artists with audiences.”

“I am honored to join the Currier Museum of Art,” Fusi said. “The museum has strong artist and community programs and I hope that my enduring interest in art in the public sphere will deepen and expand these initiatives. Moreover, the museum has a rich and diverse collection, including two outstanding homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, which are alone worth a visit.”

Fusi will work collaboratively to deliver innovative curatorial projects and commissions which focus on community engagement and diversification of our audiences. He will move to Manchester at the end of January.

Fusi, who has curated more than 100 exhibitions and commissioned almost 200 works, has broad experience with artists and exhibitions.

He was most recently artistic director of the Yerevan Biennial and curator-in-residence at the Griffin Art Projects in Vancouver. He previously served as artistic director of PIAC at the Fondation Prince Pierre in Monaco, and the Illingworth Kerr Gallery in Calgary.

Fusi spent almost seven years in Liverpool, England, where he was the international curator of the Liverpool Biennial in 2010 and 2012, and director of the Open Eye Gallery, one of the oldest photography galleries in the UK. Between 2001 and 2009 he was chief curator at Palazzo delle Papesse Contemporary Art Centre in Siena.

At the Currier, the chief curator works closely with the director and senior curator in formulating exhibitions and proposing additions to the permanent collection.

As curator of contemporary art, Fusi will lead contemporary commissions and the residency program, founded in 2018 and based in a house adjacent to the museum.

The chief curator is an essential part of the museum’s senior leadership team and will foster collaboration and innovation across the museum, especially in the presentation and interpretation of art. The chief curator is also charged with developing partnerships locally and internationally to advance the mission of the museum.

The Currier Museum of Art, meanwhile, is an internationally renowned art museum that features paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, and photographs, including works by Monet, Picasso, O’Keeffe, Hopper, and Wyeth.

The museum presents exhibitions, tours, art classes, and community programs year-round, and hosts a growing artist-in-residence program.

Two houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright are part of its permanent collection.
