MANCHESTER — Police are searching for the driver of the vehicle that struck a pedestrian on Union Street in the area of Merrimack Street early Sunday morning, causing what police described as a serious head injury to the alleged victim.

It was shortly before 6:30 a.m. that the vehicle, which police said appears to be a dark-colored, four-door hatchback, collided with the pedestrian, described as a 35-year-old man, as he crossed Union Street.

Police, firefighters and medical personnel arrived to find the man lying next to a curb and partially in the road, suffering from what police said appeared to be a potentially serious head injury.

He was transported by American Medical Response ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

Police said that through the course of the investigation, officers determined that “the motor vehicle involved in this collision fled the scene.”

They said that with the assistance of area surveillance camera footage, investigators were able to obtain a photo of the suspect vehicle.

As they continue investigating, police are looking for the public’s assistance in identifying the vehicle and the driver.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact the department’s Traffic Unit at 668-8711.
