GILFORD — Authorities said Monday that the identity of the individual killed in a confrontation with police Sunday night could be released sometime today once a scheduled autopsy is completed.

The individual, believed to be a man, was reportedly armed with a knife when police responded to 5 Varney Point Road Left shortly before 10 p.m.

According to a statement issued Monday on behalf of Attorney General John Formella, two Gilford officers encountered a resident armed with a knife upon arriving at the large, lakeside home. During the encounter, according to the statement, one officer discharged a Taser, and a second officer discharged his firearm.

The resident subsequently died, according to the statement. It doesn’t say whether the death occurred at the residence, a hospital or elsewhere.

It’s unknown if anyone else was in the residence during the incident. But Formella’s statement indicates nobody else, including the two officers, were injured.

Also being withheld are the names of the officers involved, pending the conclusion of formal interviews, according to the statement.

It states that the “initial responding officers” were wearing body cameras.

By early Monday morning, a team of investigators from local and state police agencies were coming and going from the house, which had been cordoned off with crime scene tape.

Also present was the state police Major Crime Unit, which was parked alongside the front of the property.

Varney Point Road Left is one of the two main roads — the other being Varney Point Road Right — that run along the shore of Pig Island. Fay’s Boat Yard is located on Smith Cove at the fork of the Left and Right roads, while the Gilford Town Beach is situated on the other side of the roads.
