Boston woman arrested in connection with July boat crash in Pelham

Ivonne Pena, age 31, of Boston

PELHAM — Local authorities have taken custody of a Boston woman following her arrest in that city on a warrant accusing her of causing the crash between her personal watercraft (PWC) and a boat on Long Pond in July.

Ivonne Pena, 31, was arraigned late last week in Hillsborough County Superior Court South in Nashua on one count each of aggravated boating while intoxicated and reckless conduct — deadly weapon, both Class B felonies.

The crash, which occurred the afternoon of July 24, drew Pelham police, firefighters and ambulance personnel to the shore of the pond, where they determined that a woman was driving the PWC and had a female passenger on board, and both sustained serious injuries.

Both were taken to Massachusetts hospitals, one of them flown by medical helicopter. Police didn’t say whether Pena or her passenger, who wasn’t identified, was flown to the hospital.

An initial investigation determined that the PWC “was operating at a high rate of speed” when it crashed into the boat, which had four passengers on board and was floating with the engine off, police said.

Three of the passengers jumped overboard as the PWC was approaching. They and the fourth passenger were uninjured, police said.

According to her case file, Pena was released on bail following arraignment. Her next court date is a dispositional conference scheduled for Feb. 8 in the Nashua court.
