Academy for Science and Design buys new building

By Staff | Dec 3, 2022

The Academy for Science and Design Chartered Public School, located at 486 Amherst Street in Nashua, has purchased a property at 9 Townsend West in Nashua from Teledyne Flir Commercial Systems Inc.

ASD is a STEM-focused tuition-free chartered public school serving students in grades 6-12. This is the school’s fifteenth year of operation, and in that time ASD has grown from an initial enrollment of 30 students at its original Merrimack facility to an enrollment, at its current location in Nashua, of 550 students. Jennifer Cava, in her 11th year as the Director noted, “ASD recognizes the facility purchase as a landmark achievement to ensure the school’s long-term sustainability and the advancement of its mission.”

The property at 9 Townsend West is 137,000 square feet, more than double the size of the school’s current location. The school is exploring the potential expansion of programs and/or enrollment to meet the increasing demand for a high-quality, STEM-focused public school option for Granite State students as well as to respond to the needs of New Hampshire’s evolving workforce. ASD Board of Trustees Chairman, Rick Bartle added, “This is a very exciting time for ASD. Thanks to the efforts of an incredibly dedicated team, what seemed almost impossible is now a reality.”

Members of the ASD Board of Trustees and school administration are in the early stages of planning for the transition to the school’s new location. The team is working with town and state agencies to ensure that all health and safety requirements are met and also designing engaging learning spaces and laboratories to support collaborative hands-on 21st Century skill development. The school anticipates opening its doors to students, faculty, and staff in the new location in the fall of 2023.

Admissions for the 2023-2024 school year are open and will be closing on Monday Dec. 12 at 1 p.m. Interested students and families are encouraged to attend an Information Session this Saturday Dec. 3 at 9:30 a.m. at their current location at 486 Amherst Street. Additional information can be found at asdnh.org/admissions.
