Suspect in downtown stabbing and his companion in custody in Rhode Island

Kelvin B. Lewis, age 32, of 41 Cottage Street, Everett, Massachusetts
NASHUA — Kelvin B. Lewis, the Nashua man accused of stabbing a woman in the face last week, allegedly inflicting injuries serious enough to send her to a Boston hospital in critical condition, has been arrested along with a female companion in Rhode Island.
Both Lewis, 32, last known address of 41 Cottage St., Everett, Massachusetts, and the companion, Melanie A. Diperna, 23, of 25 Granite St., Northfield, are in jail at the Rhode Island State Police Hope Valley barracks following their arrests on numerous serious charges ranging from active arrest warrants and first-degree assault to attempted car-jacking and breaking and entering, according to a statement issued by Capt. Jeffrey L’heureux, Rhode Island State Police District B Commander.
Lewis and Diperna were arrested at the scene of a motor vehicle crash on I-95 in Hopkinton, Rhode Island, a small town in the southwest corner of the state on the Rhode Island-Connecticut border.
That both were charged with “obstruction of officer in execution of duty,” the equivalent of resisting arrest or detention, indicates a scuffle took place as troopers arrived at the scene of the crash.
The charges against Lewis include:

Melanie A. Diperna, 23, of 25 Granite St., Northfield
* Fugitive from justice out of New Hampshire — first-degree felony assault
* Possession of stolen motor vehicle
* Two counts of simple assault
* Assault with intent to commit specified felonies
* Attempted robbery (car-jacking)

* Breaking and entering of a dwelling when resident on premises
* Obstruction of officer in execution of duty.
The charges against Diperna include
* Fugitive from justice out of New Hampshire — Hillsborough County Superior Court warrant for failure to appear in court for possession of fentanyl, possession of Buprenorphine, dealing in or possession prescription drugs, and receiving stolen property
* Possession of a stolen motor vehicle
* Breaking and entering of a dwelling when resident on premises
* Obstruction of officer in execution of duty.
Nashua police Lt. Joshua Albert said Lewis will face those charges in Rhode Island before charges are brought against him in New Hampshire. If, and when, Lewis will be extradited to New Hampshire isn’t yet known.
Albert didn’t say whether Diperna was involved in the stabbing that Lewis is accused of perpetrating. That information may be in the court documents filed when, and if, she and Lewis are extradited.
The series of incidents that preceded Lewis’s wanted status began in Wednesday’s overnight hours, when police were called to a residence near the corner of West Hollis and Pine streets for a report of a stabbing.
Upon arrival, officers found the woman, who hasn’t been identified, suffering from “apparent stab wounds,” according to police.
While medical personnel provided emergency treatment and transported the woman to a local hospital, officers called in members of the Criminal Investigation Division to further the investigation.
Upon interviewing witnesses and other people in the area and collecting evidence, Lewis was identified as a suspect in the stabbing.
A warrant was issued for his arrest on a felony first-degree assault charge, police said. They said the suspect, later identified as Lewis, fled the scene, and was believed to be armed and dangerous.
Police are asking anyone who may have more information about the incident to contact the department at 594-3500, or call its Crime Line, 589-1665.
