Lengthy investigation leads to arrest in June shooting of pregnant woman

Corey Raikes, 27, of Manchester

MANCHESTER — A local man who was one of five suspects arrested following a standoff with SWAT officers in June has now been charged with firing the round that entered a pregnant woman’s apartment and struck her, police said.

Taken into custody was Corey Raikes, 27, a Manchester resident whose current address wasn’t provided, after officers and detectives worked the case since the incident occurred on June 10 in the area of Bell and Hall streets.

The woman, 35, sustained a single gunshot wound, causing injuries that police said weren’t life-threatening. Her unborn child was not harmed, and the woman has since recovered from the injury, police said.

The 3-month investigation eventually directed detectives to Raikes as the suspect who allegedly fired the gun. Police charged him with one count each of second-degree assault with a firearm and falsification of physical evidence, along with two counts of felon in possession of a firearm.

Raikes was booked on the charges in absentia, as he has been in jail since June 23, when he was arrested on charges that include possession of heroin/crack cocaine with intent to distribute.

That case is currently proceeding in Hillsborough County Superior Court North. Raikes’s next scheduled court appearance is for a status conference on Dec. 9, according to his case summary filed in court.

As for the new charges, Raikes is scheduled to be arraigned today in the same court.

At the time of the June 10 incident, Raikes was out on bail in connection with a felony domestic violence charge, police said.

The incident, meanwhile, would prompt the activation of a SWAT team, after police went to an apartment at 292 Belmont St. after developing evidence that the gunshot that struck the pregnant woman came from an apartment in the multi-unit residence.

When officers attempted to contact the occupants of that apartment, described as Apt. 9, the five men in the apartment were allegedly uncooperative, and barricaded themselves inside, according to police.

Members of the SWAT team eventually made their way inside, where they located the five men — one of whom was Raikes — and took them into custody. All were charged with one count of resisting arrest or detention.

“Manchester police detectives spent a significant amount of time on this case, working diligently to identify the responsible party,” department spokeswoman Heather Hamel said in a statement.
