Slowed by traffic after allegedly reaching 161 mph on I-93, Connecticut driver arrested by state, local police

Alejandro Zapata-Rebello, 30, of Danbury, Connecticut, was booked at Woodstock police headquarters on charges accusing him of driving 161 mph on I-93 Sunday.

ASHLAND — A state trooper with the Troop F barracks was on patrol shortly before noon Sunday when he suddenly noticed a bright-orange blur zoom past him in the northbound lanes of I-93.

The object turned out to be an orange, 2021 Chevrolet Corvette, that was clearly exceeding the posted 70 mph speed limit — and when the trooper checked his radar, it showed the car was allegedly traveling at 161 mph, well over twice the limit.

As it turned out, the driver, identified as Alejandro Zapata-Rebello, 30, of Danbury, Connecticut, was operating one of several sports cars that witnesses told police were “driving erratically at high rates of speed” and “nearly causing crashes,” police said.

So fast was the Corvette allegedly traveling that the trooper chose not to try and pursue it, instead putting out a be on the lookout bulletin to state and local police in the area.

Among the officers who heard the bulletin were members of the Woodstock Police Department, who promptly positioned a cruiser on the highway. A short time later, Zapata-Rebello and his orange Corvette allegedly sped past the officer, who clocked its speed at 130 mph, police said.

The Woodstock officer was able to catch up to the Corvette, thanks to traffic bunching up further north on the highway.

He pulled Zapata-Rebello over near Exit 32, and stood by until the trooper who initially noticed the car arrived at the traffic stop.

The trooper charged Zapata-Rebello with two counts of reckless driving and one count of disobeying an officer, police said. The Woodstock officer also filed one count of reckless driving against Zapata-Rebello, police said.

He was booked and later released on a summons that calls for him to appear in Plymouth district court on Sept. 22.
