CONCORD — Attorney General John Formella on Wednesday released the identities of the New Boston police officer and the contracted security officer who shot a Massachusetts man during a confrontation two weeks ago at the Space Force Station in New Boston.
Shane Morton, a five-year member of the New Boston police department, and Peter White, a contracted security officer who has worked for his employer, Lockwood Hills, for about six years and has prior military experience, “discharged their firearms during the incident that resulted in the death of Michael Foley,” Formella said in a statement.
Foley, 33, who was from an undisclosed city or town in Massachusetts, reportedly approached the armed guards at the entrance gate of the secure facility, and engaged in a conversation with the personnel. He then exited his vehicle with a weapon or weapons and was fatally shot at the entrance.
New Boston, Amherst and Bedford Fire and EMS responded, but Foley was declared deceased at the scene.
An autopsy performed the day after the May 13 incident by Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Mitchell Weinberg determined that the cause of Foley’s death was a single gunshot wound, and that the manner of death is homicide.
Formella said in the statement that the “exact circumstances surrounding this incident remain under investigation,” and that “a report regarding whether the use of force was justified will be released once the investigation is completed.”
