MANCHESTER – Hannaford Supermarkets is teaming up with Volta Charging, the industry leader in electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, to bring simple and easy, clean EV charging energy to New Hampshire, beginning with the Hannaford store located at 201 John E Devine Drive in Manchester. The Volta EV charging stations at Hannaford are the first stations introduced to New Hampshire, furthering Volta’s mission to guide and accelerate a clean energy future that benefits all.
“Hannaford remains steadfast in our ongoing mission to address the climate crisis and become fully powered by renewable energy by 2024. Introducing Volta EV charging stations to New Hampshire was the logical next step in doing what’s right for our team, customers, and our planet,” said George Parmenter, who leads sustainability efforts for Hannaford. “With these new charging stations, we hope to help our customers lower their environmental impact as we all collectively strive to make a positive difference in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
Hannaford continues to lead the industry in sustainability initiatives as the first large-scale supermarket retailer in its marketplace to achieve zero food waste-to-landfill in 2021, and just last month announcing its commitment to 100-percent renewable energy by 2024, becoming first in the Northeast to match its bold commitment with an aggressive timeline.
To commemorate the launch of the new Volta EV charging stations, Hannaford hosted a special event on Thursday, May 12, where Hannaford and Volta company leaders participated in a ceremonial “first charge” to celebrate the sustainability initiative.
“Consumers are increasingly searching for and supporting companies that mirror their own values,” said Sharon Baker, Vice President of Enterprise Solutions, Volta Charging. “We’re excited to drive forward in partnership with Hannaford to further our goal of weaving charging seamlessly into people’s everyday lives.”
Volta provides seamless, universal, and reliable EV charging – centered on consumer behavior – located where people live, shop, work, and play. With unique charging stations that feature high-impact, large-format digital screens near the entrances of premium commercial locations such as Hannaford, Volta’s network is among the most utilized in the nation.
“It is more important than ever that we seek ways to increase our energy independence,” said Joyce Craig, Mayor of Manchester. “We are grateful to Hannaford and Volta for investing in a sustainable future for us all by providing Manchester residents and Granite Staters access to clean, renewable energy.”
Hannaford continues to expand and introduce EV charging stations to parking areas for a total of 163 plugs at 31 stores (and growing) throughout the Northeast. Hannaford and Volta have also announced plans to bring EV charging stations to Hannaford’s Rochester and Dover locations later this year.
“We are honored to become the first location in New Hampshire, to welcome Volta EV charging stations,” said Lisa Lessard, Hannaford Supermarkets John E Devine Store Manager. “We look forward to offering our customers more convenience and flexibility to shop while charging their electric vehicles, helping to lower their energy costs.”
Already an early and proven leader in sustainability efforts, Hannaford’s prior milestone successes include:
• Becoming the first grocery retailer in the nation to introduce reusable bags to its customers in the mid-1980s;
• Earning notable distinction with the introduction of North America’s first LEED Platinum supermarket in Augusta, Maine, for eco-friendly, energy-saving features that utilized approximately half the energy requirements of grocery stores of similar size and character in 2009;
• Installing a first-in-the-nation refrigeration system using natural refrigerant that is better for the environment and earning Hannaford a “Best of the Best” award from the US EPA Green Chill Partnership in 2013.
